Released June 2002
You ran aground and the gear was found
You kept abreast of onshore developments
You took pride in mistaken schemes
Mistaken pride your recurring theme
The sea meant little without the context of land
You idolised your mistaken hands
Stained glass turned back into sand
And all those juvenile rhyming bands

Without a cloud who's to say where sky ends?
Without a sound you approach the kalends
Rusty hands are prone to error
How do sky and land sound together?

New sea around the ancient ground
You cannot quantify what you found
Another derelict mill to dwell in
Another manmade hill to fall down
Quarantined on the brutal brood-roof
What inner bastard aches to swoop?
When you tire of repeated questioning
Take a leaf from the heathen texts
A gravestone has no moral compass

O mausoleum of muscle memory
Deliver me of these mistaken hands
Stay under for a hundred aeons
Keep on erring but keep it fresh
Here on land 'more' means 'more of less'
This is more or less your final mistake
The gear was found when you ran aground
You kept abreast of onshore developments

Without a cloud who's to say where sky ends?
Without a sound you approach the kalends
Rusty hands are prone to error
How do sky and land sound together?

O mausoleum of muscle memory
Deliver me of these mistaken hands

''Awful torus.''
He takes his time on stairs, this boy. He takes pains, then issue, then care. He takes the sea air. He puts one egg in each of multiple baskets. A nest of modern fluff squats fartily atop his Charlotte Gainsbourg face. In his image none were created. He is quick to forgive and slow to forget. His lapels are contradiction-peppered. He holds the lease on a condemned bridewell. He repointed the smokestack personally. He was involved with the daughter of a hazmat haulier, gradually tiring of the arrangement as the village expanded, and the island shrank, around him, queasily and bulbously, like a hurried dolly zoom. He is a student of electricity. He has on the mainland a cousin whose canvas pumps he is unfit to fill. He recently measured his BMI. The figure was incomprehensible. Sunlight turns his dermis ecru. His first touch lets him down. In a previous life he prepared dinners for a landowner. The landowner's son treated him with disdain. He poisoned the landowner's son and was escorted to the gallows. He awoke on the island, smothered in motherly mucous, his new eyes glowering manically from his squelchy, purple face, whose gummy trap screeched endless profanity in a language meaningless to all present. A man, a stranger, his father, hurried him from the bloodbath on to the landing, down on to the top step, on to the second step, on to the third, misstepped forth and clattered grotesquely into the hallway wall, new father and new son bawling and broken in precisely identical locations in body, space and time.

''Quulgent fescord braskent.''
You descend by rope into the quulgent braskent, sinking gradually and irreversibly, the jabbet of writhing pithers below, nasping and nisping at your tattered Francombe. From glim pudgels in the bock poke little bibisuns, curious expressions fixed across their mettian hesps. You jarry and gank, but to no avail: your bithra is up and your bothra are numbered.

Inside the daskiat, a dozen raskish bokkers mercilessly bokk you, disorienting you and causing you to stumble. In steadying yourself, a loose papple of your Francombe flops briefly over the pithipith, violently animating the spinvy, grawksing mawsks, jivelling away in their own skurk.

Much later, a miffluous temperand guides you to your bimberg, where you will spend the next hundred affia, maybe more, chabbing the land and devessellating juviously at the foot of the Djentjora, like so many before you. And as you chab and devessellate, you will forget your life before the braskent, forget how you survived outwith its quulgent dangs, because your life before the braskent, and its quulgency, and the Djentjora, was an entirely forgettable one.

''Bog body.''
Novus and I had been mooching around Uchter when it appeared, gleaming and allantoid, through a bank of woolly cirrus over the crumbling, mildew-ridden spire. Faint, urgent sirens reached us from the village, quickly deteriorating into the general hum of distant panic. Novus wept.

I gaped at it with incongruous placidity, studying in its chrome flank the reflected village and its tiny, shrieking inhabitants, like some benevolent omnipresent, passive and unmoved. As it approached, I saw in it the leaden church roof, the ailing spire from above, its crucifix rendered flat as a hyphen in the centre.

Now it hung directly overhead, displaying the weeping, upturned face of Novus Hamm, his wispy coiffure dampened, clammy and tamped down by dense, wordless terror; and my own sublime countenance, healthy, unspoiled and serene, waiting patiently. Novus fell to his knees as the moor began to shake, bedrock audibly rent beneath us.

As a child, I had been taught and quickly convinced that I was the sole and rightful epicentre of all existence, all humanity, all. Now, as the village of my birth, the landscape of my youth and Novus, the closest approximation to a sibling I had ever known, evaporated around me, I was thankful finally to have this notion so conclusively disconfirmed.

''Apparatus.''
Markus clambered down from his bough, grazing his bare white shins on the abrasive bark, and adjusted the tripod. The winter sun hung low, defining the apparatus richly and decisively. Markus spat at the trunk.

In an adjoining field, a crouching Fergus fussed dutifully over the various barnyard animals milling about his slight, compact frame. From a waxen pocket he produced a cluster of grubby carrots, which he shared equally among the beasts, discreetly slipping the remainder to his personal favourite, a nameless brown goat. He stood, dusted off his hands, expanded his ribcage with a cathartic ‘nnnnghh’, and settled unthinking into his default posture: erect save for his neck and upper back, which sat low and forward like those of a vulture. Marshalling his thoughts, he trudged off through the churned up scurf, upfield towards the scrub.

Markus watched Fergus through the viewfinder of his apparatus, smoothly tracking his ambling traipse by rotating the fixture atop the tripod. Fergus paused at the boundary of the scrub, somehow as if choreographed, and Markus fiddled briefly with the tripod before pulling the trigger. He hurriedly disassembled the apparatus and slunk away, by a labyrinthine series of fogous, to a hamlet where his new identity lived out its remaining half-decade, before succumbing to tuberculosis like its father before it.

''Clock work.''
His stubby fingers play a dilapidated instrument on the forecourts of boxy Northern European hotels, accompanying vehicular reversal beeps in the clean cinnamon dusk. He frequents alleys, squatting on his haunches behind the detritus, goading the eight-wheelers-and-more, awaiting a conductor or conductrix to ahem his fingers and faculties into readiness.

On more than one occasion, I have been that oblivious conductrix, reversing my sooty container into the mouths of seemingly deserted alleys, the second point of three, his dilapidated, stubby meanderings swept and scattered haphazard by the brash and unreasonable Scandinavian winds.

More often than not, I am unaware of his presence until I have left it, revving and skating across the frozen macadam, away and apart, pursued by his discordance as starlight pursues planets, even now, in any given quarter of the expanding and ridiculous universe.

''Orson.''
Orson’s eyes looked like he’d been underwater. I watched silently as he produced his hip flask. Across its brushed chrome flank was scratched the threat ‘Colby Fagan dwells adjacent’.

"I’ve never been awake at this time of day," said Orson. It had been a long time since I had last been asleep at this time of day. Orson idly tugged at his K-wires.

"What was the concensus on Fagan?" said I after a sloppy beat.

"He’s rot," replied the old man with truculence. "Done well thus far. Not today."

I nodded gravely and slightly sagely. A lonesome and weak sliver of electric light momentarily pierced the gloaming from a source unknown, before folding back up into nothing. Orson seemingly was oblivious.

Orson’s study/library was a darkwood airlock of a place. Modern communications absent, Orson’s sole portholes to the outdoors were the handful of stained stained glass windows that sparsely, randomly peppered the outer wall, and through which he now gazed dimly, glassily, enveloped by gloamy chill and fingering the worn thread of his now open flask.

I regarded him and pondered what he might propose regarding Colby Fagan. Where was he? Also, what an unlikely hero was Orson. Orson, incidentally, was both his given and family name.

You dropped out
For want of skill and muscle
Place your skull in the basin
And let your knees go weak
Hearken back to a purple age
When scurvy racked the fleet

And you shouldn't spread around
How easily you lie down
You're a hexagon with stuffed wings
You're a circle too round to keep
How easily I sleep

While you were waiting
The tape became unstable
Expose yourself to the elements
Ah, it's just another way to die

You dropped it
And wrecked your ears, nose and throat
Place your bet in the back room
And let your knees go weak
Hearken back to a purple age
When shit flowed down the street

And you shouldn't spread around
How easily you lie down
You're a hexagon with stupid wings
You're a tea-leaf too weak to steep
How easily I sleep

On a mountainside
The rain waits to fall
Bodies turn without a sound
Castles ruined underground

On an upland plain
Ready for the chill
To slip into your brain
And mutate in the cells

In a concrete bay
The tide waits to draw
Bodies turn without a sound
Castles ruined underground

On a lowland plain
Ready for the chill
To slip into your brain
And mutate in the cells

And the bodies turn
And they always will
So slip into the veins
And mutate in the cells

In the morning
When you come down
It's the same old scene
Leaves blowing
In through the kitchen
It's the same old scene

And in the darkness
It's okay to be seen falling
And the competition's learning
To read between the lines

In the evening
You know it's coming
It's the same old deal
Leaves blowing
In through the kitchen
It's the same old deal

And in the darkness
It's okay to be heard calling
And the competition's learning
To read between the lines

The time it takes means nothing to you

Stubble field, it's looking blurry
Cold, awake, and my tongue feels furry
And the blood test came back negative
And so we're free to lie around
In camouflage on the green belt outside the town

A box of wine at ten-to-nine
The exposé is done and fine
And you panicked as the driver froze
A soggy fiver up his nose
And you had to take the wheel and improvise

The call came in and said that I should just turn you away
But you always come back

A hundred different histories
And stop motion photography
It made me feel so very old
The sound was warped and the image scrolled
And she never said a single sentence more

The cold set in; we quickly tore the tent pegs from the ground
I'd never come so fast
My muscle memory is back

They took her outside
And they tied her to the ground
On an open flood plain
And the scared crows gathered round
The wind blew wood trees
And the blue sky made no sound
But will you breach the cordon
When you reach the border, baby?

Watch the town flood
And wash the blood from your trees and hands

When you reach the border
You have breached your order, baby

Boarded up and slapdash
Servile, point to the margin
She shows you around the desk cemetary
Rope lights
Inverse, in verse, inverse
Wonderful liberating puddles of motor oil
In the black cemetary
Yesterday's youth interred
Graves marked out not with stone
But with the furniture they defaced
And their falls from grace
Time passes but not space

Say what you like
It's no worse than the sight
Of an old stone bridge
Crumbling down off the ridge

Say what you like
It's no worse than the sight
Of that old wooden bed
And the darkness it spread

It's the cold in you

Say what you like
It's no worse than the sight
Of an old white veil
In a window for sale

It's the cold in you

There's nothing south-eastern about the north-west
You take it all because you know you'll get the rest
No-one knows where it's going next

The secession is completed
Straddle now the riverbed

There's nothing north-eastern about the south-west
They took it all because they knew they'd get the rest
But how to tell where it's going next

The secession is complete

I told you everything I knew
And then you put down the phone
I met you there with the police
And Rachel's bones

It's so hard to know

I hear the birdsong
As I lay me down to sleep
Our conversations, well,
They never cut too deep

It's so hard to know

Under the snow
A slag heap's just another hill
I love you when I'm well
And I hate you when I'm ill

You were so hard to know

Q, q, q, q
Stand in the queue
For over half an hour
Awaiting the area manager
To emerge
From the fortified iron door
To the back office
In the rear corner
His complaint
Is of a personal nature
Much more so than yours is
Every man lives by his own scale
Every man and woman by their own scale
One man's hit single
Is another man's shit jingle
The theory of relatives dictates
That Christmas will be a gauntlet
Make small talk with the racists
Small talk with the racists

''29''
A decade on her untreated hybrid face, jaw tight and both hands flat on the map. Under glossless canvas, cowering and cowed.

''28''
Sharp burgundy trees and hazy hillock backdrop, nimbus and panels fluid on the grey scale. Exhaled droplets in inapparent suspension, dirty wheeled creatures barking, dark, parked. Stub suck and bag swig, no restitution for the wicked.

''27''
A low ceiling and a low hum, mechanics compressed and senses piped thin. Rice paper yellowed and baked in the petrified attics of dead decades, obsolete machinery dusted and fuzzed into blunt focus. On the brittle pane, cobwebs of whilom spiders.

''26''
Northern territory, plagued by soft light, sharks and conquerors, plains and sky stacked parallel like shelving. Dim lamps hunker over a dusty trestle, motors jostle and vapours envelop the slough.

''25''
Creeping patch on the mottled brick, rusted rims and lenses bottle-thick. Columns swamped with false art, cirrus bloated and murderous theories proffered. Plant matter under shale and manmades underpins the drag.

''24''
Furtive, at the junction, terrified and tertiary. Future crimes, aligned and sublime. It takes an age to age and a sage to rage. You imbibed the virus, neutralised the threat, left me bandaged and breathing and left.

''23''
A month in freezing hell and yet we tessellate so well. Islands of motor, lakes of argon, tessellate in the aftermath, present since 1812, we soar coldly and wax loud. In cold fists grasp moss clumps, a bang on a mat, a pier cracks, I remember nothing but recall it all. Thump into the surf and swim east.

''22''
Test pilot, nascent in the basement, thronged through corridors, pressure spurts and exit gates, trammelled extensive and rolled up in a tube. Tunnels, channels, pea-green limbs and rainwater, sky wed to earth and earth shaken, sieved, seven more severed. Token canopy, tempest reversed. This is tensing, the summit is alive and teeming, ants on a spaceship, creaking and dripping air, counterbalanced in the invisibility, you shook the dust and covered me, pillbugs cross the garden, immersed in grass, shadows glow through gaps and cracks in the panel.

''21''
A stale room, peeling thick emulsion columns, blue-white, cold, hard plastic and a watch battery. Near the baths, a dusty warmth, yellowed rice paper and hanging, fierce bulbs on chains. Cavernous whistle echo, half-naked behind plastic furniture, obsolete slang etched shoddily into the shelving.

''20''
Pallid battlements, black timber and limb gravity, urine meanders through cobble gaps and masonry juts from the ridge. Under gaslight cobbles glisten and squat archways hinder and abet. A black ram mounts and splutters under a frozen cherubic gaze, glimpses of the long dead etched in mercury and nickel like a vinyl slab, needlecraft vague and damp; and more distant and ageless, through the same celestial lens, the recording never stops.

''19''
Naked metal tendrils and an arcane sunset, rust and algae, obsolete missives and dead brick. On a shrinking island, solid marsh and sodden blocks, unnatural grey and blue, pareidolic error and empty depth, no moon. We should not be here.

''18''
Tyres, chains, thick oak trunks, rope. Dew on solid tyre tracks, gentle clanking, ropes dangling free. Something in dead memory occurred, bark buckles and birds bark, dead wood and deceptive leaves, crisp and awkward, like grooves in vinyl, await transition from present to past.

''17''
Silence on the ridgeway, grey lines in chalk dust and ellipses mapped. The constant varies and variables transferred, a fixed shell that sheds its innards, the chalk lines unsharable, silence.

''16''
Soluble crystals, untreated planks and foam, lapping mossy brickwork, static and uninterrupted, the surface poised, taut and terse. Above, an engine fires and spits, above, gases thin, above, light is honest, above, dust settles.

''15''
Two ridges trisect an obelisk and all matter accumulates at once. In milky eyes, a junction is breached, fuller and helix-vivid, no permanence is required. Two panes, aspen too, tucked under a spiral’s arm, sucked out; prey-birds tread the circuit and all noise is obstinate, obscure, obsolete.

''14''
Het up in the chest and impossible clouds jangle. Walkways uncoated, untreated, roads of jelly, mangled and crumbling into the foam. On the periphery, complicit and necessary, a line straight to the belly, trodden and trod, beyond blue and orange as orange.

''13''
Symmetrical needles and plaits, oak and birch, bicycles. Bonnets on the overhang and sap on the platform, leaves and light flitter and flicker and finches alight and leave. Rich copper brick, slates faux and fey, the discontinued is resumable.

''12''
Ten nautical brothers, arraigned and displayed, healthy, painted, untroubled and convinced of their invincibility, slapping away at the totem. United they stand, brandy in hand.

''11''
Disparate tendencies up on the ridge, the panels and panes reflecting perpetually. Silt, salt, ash, the heads of villagers, gas mains and half-sunken ships, thick cords of steel, moss. Plans taking shape, the rectangular board in their cuboid headquarters, grasping, gasping, gaping.

''10''
A terrapin tank reflects the moonlight, as distilled through a tall, oily window and the fronds of several enormous ferns.

''9''
At the edge of a circular panel, a circular light radiates a circular glow. A rectangular wall in a cuboid room receives the circular glow and it is conical until it becomes and remains a circle. The rectangular wall of the cuboid now displays a circular shape of light. Nothing interrupts the circle, or the rectangle, or the cuboid, or the cone. The light continues to shine against the wall and all the shapes remain the same.

''8''
A singular point of light. Ground ruptures and trees topple. Solemnity and gauze, haphazard and zig-zag, coat the graze. Propulsion achieved, a dashed line demarcates the situation, recent concrete and idiot lungs, and all this at a time when a tree and a rock made a thousand weapons.

''7''
The slightest redaction, the tights and red action, her jeans are the colour of royal blood. Line the streets with your blood, the village floods as unbearable shapes descend. Unfamiliar digits, previously off-scale, making threats empty as a weathered model village. Few surfaces left to reverberate off, decades fallen into the unsympathetic surf. A page of print preceding an infinite awkward silence, peppered with drunken spikes, anomalies which serve to underpin; nothing is deleted.

''6''
Wires crossed, a wire crossed, lines crisp and time lost. A graph obsolesced by dust - its lines hidden and their relevance faded - a forgotten room of obsolete information. Rafters marked by no human, those humans are no longer here, you find their final document still under the plate, awaiting absorption. Cut wires from the walls and ceiling, remove what is relevant and leave.

''5''
Two temporary structures, leaning forward. Bases rounded and apt boundaries drawn, bound and drawn out, shocking in their brightness and brightness everywhere. A woman sings and stops singing. Wrapped securely, not rakish, snaking perfectly and synchronised by default. Months pass and the structures lean.

''4''
Muscular and painted, an iron hand clicks on. No collective acceleration, coastal and languid, a celestial path self-aware and inevitable. Deviant claims and yet no deviation, the path standardised and meticulously maintained. Chaos disproves itself, yellow blooms held meaninglessly aloft. The penultimate premise is always false. This is always true.

''3''
Salt flats, punctuated by furze, a low orange moon and night creatures. No symbols survive. In transit, lupine and scorched. There are things that are okay to ignore.

''2''
Your objects stored within or overhead. Finger the material, finger the outline, finger the essence of the object, experience the object with fingers, your fingers, which tell you what happens, listen to your fingers, your fingers always matter, your fingers remain relevant.

''1''
Mosaic fresco, hazy and incomplete, the final qualifier subsumed by translation. Eerie on the fringes of the oblast, a taste in the air, like the woodlands of infancy, populated by mutants, all placid and growing patiently. Fungi, fawns and distilled space-light, the canopy alone obscures the universe, each leaf hides a thousand galaxies.

It was the torsion, not the tension
That caught your attention
As the narrative slipped away
Proceed without caution
Pay no attention
To the safety rating
Or the circling buzzards waiting

Your number is your own
But your name is mud on these streets
And the hours and company you keep
Are known, are known, are known
You can never get back home

With the continental shift
And the island slipped adrift
A scene too dark to mention
A floating abortion

In unfathomable antiquity, we used to say 'keep your ears warm and your lungs cold'. As times grew happier this adage was gradually forgotten, phased out like a ludicrous garment style. When life is slow, trends loop through generations, not decades - and because we died young and glorious, the loops would seldom close. Wisdom was buried in unmarked spots, undiscovered by descendents too vain to dig. I cannot recall the name of our currency, no matter how vehemently you insist we had one. At my birth, my father carved my name in stone; at his death, I carved his in wood. The guts of creatures were multi-purpose: some magic, some mundane. There was no word for 'blame'. There were thirty-one for 'shame'. Medicine and poison were one and the same. Our standard was the colour of that day's sky. We buried the dead far from home.
